Always interesting to hear Harrison's law firm-centric perspective. I'll note for the record that a fulfilling career in the law outside of the law firm environment is possible. I've been a federal sector government attorney for more than 20 years now, and have no intention of doing anything else until after I'm eligible to retire - which is when I turn 57, by the way.

Do you offer individual consulting?

Harrison represents all of the values/attitudes associated with biglaw that I hate...and that's exactly why I find his content interesting.

thanks very much for this video. I'm an Australian and hope to transfer from Aus Biglaw (HSF/KWM/Allens) to US Biglaw after a few years. I just have one question - how far down the ladder will I be knocked down in terms of Cravath? For example - if I'm a 4th year lawyer in ECM or M&A at a top law firm such as HSF over here, and transition to any of the cravath scale biglaw firms in the US, will I be knocked down to 1st, 3rd, or stay at 4th? Thanks for your time.

I find this very insightful! I think this applies to every job as well. On a different topic, how much do you know about the legal profession in Canada and the differences from US law firms. Not really sure what I am asking for, just any knowledge on Canadian law would be greatly appreciated. Considering this as a career in my country.

This is 10/10 advice. I’m in a rough spot right now, haven’t worked in 1.5 years because I had to spend that time taking care of my dad full time before he died. Working on back into the workforce right now and this is much needed, if very tough, advice (can’t use your firm since I only have close to 1 yr experience, and worse still I want to transition from transactional work to lit). Thank you for posting this and sharing this info for free. You’re changing and improving a lot of attorney’s lives

"Know what you want to do" is the same kind of useless advice as "love yourself." Gee, why haven't I thought of that. Let me flip that "know yourself" switch. So stupid of me not to have done it. Of course when someone is strongly motivated it makes things easier. A bigger problem - one that you don't solve and the one that really needs solving - is how to find out what would be the area of interest that would be worth it to get involved in and develop over the long run. Those who are lucky enough to discover it with their first job do better than those who don't.

you can never lie on your resume as much as employers lie on their job descriptions. which aren't usually even job descriptions, they are people descriptions.

I couldn't agree more. If I wanted to work in a tax firm, and I could show A grades in Income Tax, Corporate Tax, Tax Procedure, and Estate/Gift Tax, would they really care that I scored a D in Civil Procedure?

Another question regarding international students: due to the increase in US tuitions, native born US citizens have been attending universities abroad, even well regarded universities (Oxford, LSE, Amsterdam, etc.) and earning law degrees there, including LLMs to qualify for Bars in the UK/EU, frequently in Law & Finance, International Taxation, International Trade and Investment Law, European Competition Law, etc. Is there a path for these students to return to the US, earn an LLM, sit for the Bar, and earn positions working in their respective specialties? After earning multiple LLMs, a much less specialized, three year long, JD doesn't fit their needs. Is there a path for these attorneys, and what becomes of them?

I'm trying to hire for my law firm right now. Very well said on the specialization point. A resume showing some sort of specialization helps for picturing a specific role for their skills, rather than trying to guess how they might perform as a generalist.
